To the Iron Mining prospects of Tharaka? And coal in Mwingi?

To the natural gas discovered in Wajir

Lotikipi basin aquifer?

What about to Wrectangular's gold saga?

Just wondering what happens to some of these headline news.

They all suffered the 2 week hype effect. Anything more than 2 weeks in Kenya becomes distant, irrelvant, forgotten, old news...
If you dont believe... do you recall the famous Kirinyaga Deputy busted moments. Guys thought that was his end yet today he attends to his life as if another feather was added to his cap. 2 weeks staypower is all you need to survive.

Media houses drive the narrative. The stories end once they cease to suit their purpose.

The tragedy called Kenya, when Dakote came with cheap cement narrative for him to be given mining blocks he was asked to give 30% of initial investments to briefcase carriers who in turn will just be there milking his sweat. He said yes and left

Lappset. As soon as the plans were made, greedy Kenyans went and bought Burotis on the whole proposed railway, pipeline network from Lamu to Ethiopia and South Sudan so as to gain from Government compensation.

More than 18 years after Eric Wainaina told us we are a small minded country, we have not changed one bit. For most of Kenyans the ultimate achievement is to be a landlord.

Actually, what happened after the President went there and made a rant over these people who had "acquired" other people's land? We all blamed Orengo for the mess at the Ministry of Land. Mama Ngilu went and issued titles to people but what about the speculators?

You are right, I withdraw the comment on greedy Kenyans. People naturally respond to incentives and the blame is with the Government planning. The way things stand everyone knows that the only sure way to benefit is to receive hard cash from the Government upfront. The project will probably never be done because the price of undeveloped land will eat up all the resources. The mistake was not embedding something in law that would safeguard against this kind of speculative profiteering ahead of any project. Experience has shown it is the death of many mega projects.

I like to go here -> https://www.skyscraperci...forumdisplay.php?f=2146 for info on those projects. You'll find good fact based info too instead of the panganga peddled by our media houses.

This is why I keep saying that the Kenyan culture of buying plots is an impediment to development and gava needs to take action.

My proposal is and has always been that gava should charge hefty property taxes for speculators. If you buy land in a prime area and it remains idle, gava should tax the land heavily.

Gava should encourage people to create wealth by producing goods and services, not through speculation.

Any form of speculation is detrimental to economic growth. In Kenya's case, land speculation is has the worst effect.

In fact the exact opposite of this is true. Land speculation is detrimental to development. It creates a situation where the value of land becomes too inflated as is the case in Nairobi now. Imagine if a foreign investor is choosing between setting up a factory in Addis Ababa vs Nairobi. If cost of land is his primary decision factor, he will give Nairobi a wide berth.

So basically Kenya is losing job creating ventures and instead much of the land goes to speculators who hardly create any jobs.

Also service delivery by the government is affected. If the gava has to pay more compensation to these land speculators, then they will have less money to build much needed infrastructure which means fewer jobs created and less services delivered by the government.

As Kusadikika pointed out above, the cost of some infrastructure projects is sky high because gava has to compensate speculators. Many gava projects are hindered because of this. The cost to Kenyans is bigger because lack of proper infrastructure means less development and fewer jobs and fewer business opportunities. Basically Kenyans lose and speculators win.

All idle land (except fallow agricultural land which should have a maximum exception of three years) should be taxed. This will discourage speculators and avail a lot of acreage to development / economic activity.
